Only You Can Stop Yourself – Resilience

In his insightful vlog episode “Only You Can Stop Yourself,” Israel Akpovoke teaches that our greatest obstacles are not external circumstances but internal limitations. Drawing from his Acting My Script series, Akpovoke focuses on resilience, purpose, and becoming all that God designed us to be.

He begins by challenging a mindset of blame. Many people spend years pointing to what others did or failed to do as reasons for their stagnation. Akpovoke emphasises that while people may hinder us temporarily, only we can decide to remain stuck. This echoes the thoughts of author John C. Maxwell, who states that personal growth begins when we take full responsibility for our lives (read more here).

Israel then transitions to purpose, teaching that everyone has a unique assignment written into their life script. However, fulfilling that purpose requires self-discipline, courage, and conviction. He warns against the danger of self-sabotage – when fear, doubt, or laziness keeps us from stepping out in faith. This aligns with Psychology Today’s view that self-sabotage is rooted in fear of failure or fear of success (learn more here).

On resilience, Akpovoke reminds listeners that setbacks are inevitable, but surrender is optional. He narrates examples from his journey where he almost gave up but realised quitting was a choice only he could make. This awareness fuelled his resilience, leading to personal victories that would have been impossible if he chose self-defeat.

He further explains that purpose demands becoming. You cannot remain who you are today and fulfil tomorrow’s assignment. Growth requires pain, discipline, and intentional transformation. Israel insists that resilience is not about enduring alone but about embracing processes that refine and prepare us for impact.

Finally, Akpovoke ends the vlog with a charge: “No one can truly stop you if you refuse to stop yourself.” External obstacles may delay you, but internal surrender is what ends your journey. Choose resilience, choose to rise, and choose to become all God has written in your script.
