One of the enemy’s greatest strategies is identity confusion. When you don’t know who you are in Christ, life becomes heavier, decisions become harder, and your inner world becomes more chaotic. God created every person with purpose, intention, and identity—but when that identity is unclear, everything else becomes uncertain.
1. You Live Outside God’s Design
When you don’t know who you are, you often settle for a version of life that is far below God’s plan. You operate on survival mode instead of walking in the authority, peace, and confidence that come from knowing you’re a child of God. For more on this, check out Israel Akpovoke’s series on Purpose‑Driven Living on his site. Learn more about walking in God’s plan from Desiring God.
2. You Become Vulnerable to Lies
Identity confusion opens the door to doubt, fear, and insecurity. The enemy whispers: “You’re not enough… You’re forgotten… You don’t matter.” But when you know your identity in Christ, those lies lose their power. Scripture reminds us in John 1:12 that all who receive Him are children of God. Israel also emphasizes this truth in his Identity section.
3. You Seek Validation From the World
Instead of resting in the truth that God already approves of you, you start chasing the approval of others. Likes, comments, compliments, or relationships become your source of worth. Yet worldly validation never lasts—it only leaves you emptier. For help with overcoming people-pleasing, read Focus on God, Not Approval.
4. You Pursue Purposes That Don’t Align With God’s Will
Without a clear, God-given identity, you may chase achievements, titles, or material success that look good on the outside but drain you spiritually. True fulfillment only comes when your life aligns with God’s calling, not culture’s expectations. Israel explains this in his Purpose section.
5. You Struggle With Boundaries
A person who knows who they are in Christ can confidently say “no” to what distracts and “yes” to what God is calling them into. Without identity, boundaries become blurry, and you let people or situations pull you away from your walk with God.
6. You Lose Stability During Storms
Life will always have trials. But identity is what anchors you.
When your identity is rooted in Christ:
- Storms shake you but don’t break you.
- Delays frustrate you but don’t stop you.
- Challenges test you but don’t define you.
Without that anchor, every setback feels like the end.
7. You Feel a Deep Spiritual Emptiness
No amount of success, relationships, money, or attention can fill a heart that has lost its sense of who it is in God. That emptiness is not a punishment—it’s an invitation. A gentle pull from the Holy Spirit calling you back home to your true identity.
Finding Your Identity in Christ
Identity isn’t something you create—it’s something God reveals.
Here’s where it begins:
- Remember whose you are. You are God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10).
- Believe what God says about you. Chosen, called, loved, redeemed.
- Stay rooted in the Word. Scripture reshapes your identity from the inside out.
- Pray for clarity and direction. God is never silent about your purpose.
- Surround yourself with believers who speak life. Israel covers this in his Personal Growth section.
Your true identity is not in your past, mistakes, career, or achievements. Your identity is in Christ—and when you rediscover that, everything in your life begins to align.
